Matthew Fleeger’s Path to Leading Gulf Coast Western

Long before he took the corner office, Matthew Fleeger was a college student watching his father build an oil and gas company from the ground up. Thomas H. Fleeger launched Gulf Coast Western in 1970 while his son was attending Southern Methodist University, and that early exposure would eventually shape the younger Fleeger’s career.

After graduating in 1985 with a degree focused on finance and marketing, Matthew Fleeger worked at his father’s company alongside stints at other Texas businesses, gaining a broad view of how corporations operate before striking out on his own.

A Detour Into Medical Waste

In 1993, Fleeger started MedSolutions Inc., a medical waste treatment and disposal business serving health care facilities. The venture grew quickly into a leading name in its niche, and in 2007 Fleeger sold the company to Stericycle for roughly 59 million dollars, a deal that underscored his ability to build and exit a company successfully.

Two years later, Fleeger returned to the family business, becoming President and CEO of Gulf Coast Western in 2009. He brought with him experience in corporate structuring, general partnerships, contract negotiation, and team building, all of which proved useful as he took on a company facing the aftermath of a global financial downturn.

Emphasizing Transparency and Attitude

Since then, Fleeger has pushed a culture of openness with investors, arguing that informed partners make better decisions. “Education and awareness are always an investor’s first line of defense against potential fraud,” he has said, adding that his team works to make sure partners understand both the upside and the downside of oil and gas investing.

Fleeger also points to attitude, not technical skill, as his defining trait as a leader. “Having a positive attitude in the face of adversity. I believe this is a contagious mindset for everyone and is required in every successful leader,” he has said. Under his direction, Gulf Coast Western has completed numerous merger agreements and continued its expansion across multiple states, building on the foundation his father laid more than fifty years ago.
