Westport’s Michael Gold on 25 Years of Wealth Advice

Two and a half decades of advising entrepreneurs and multigenerational families has taught Michael Gold one lesson above the rest: the advisors clients trust most are the ones who ask questions before they answer them. Gold is the founder and CEO of Gold Family Wealth in Westport, Connecticut, where his practice centers on what he calls diagnosis before prescription.

Gold holds an MBA in Quantitative Finance and Leadership from NYU’s Stern School of Business, along with Certified Financial Planner and Certified Exit Planning Advisor credentials, and he was named a Forbes Best-in-State Wealth Advisor in 2025. Despite that resume, he tells families that titles and past performance shouldn’t be the deciding factor in who they hire.

A Career Built on One Idea

Gold traces his approach partly to his own experience as a patient. After needing three spine surgeries over several years, he noticed that his neurosurgeon never asked for his opinion on treatment until a full round of diagnostics, MRIs, CAT scans, and X-rays, was complete. Only then did the surgeon present every option, from conservative to aggressive. Gold has built his firm around applying that same order of operations to money.

What 25 Years Reveals

Over the decades, Michael Gold Westport says he has repeatedly watched well-resourced families end up with specialists working in isolation, creating blind spots that surface only after they become costly. His answer is coordination, making sure an estate attorney, a CPA, and an investment manager all work from the same playbook rather than separate ones.

He also points to timing. With close to three-quarters of privately held business owners expecting to exit or transition their companies within the next decade, a shift tied to an estimated $10 to $14 trillion in wealth, Gold says the cost of choosing the wrong advisor has never been higher.

Michael Gold says that lesson has only sharpened with time, not faded, and he still asks new clients the same diagnostic questions today that shaped his very first engagements decades ago.

For families in Westport and beyond, his career offers a simple test for any advisor: ask what they ask you first. Refer to this article for related information.
